By taking the doubles point and four of six singles matches, the Elon Phoenix men's tennis team bested the Liberty men's tennis team, 5-2, at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center on Wednesday afternoon.
The defeat brings the Flames to 2-2 on the season, while the win brings the Phoenix to 2-5 and snaps a four-match skid.
Elon captured the first two doubles matches to take the doubles point. Elon's top pairing of Felipe Sarrasaque and Mario Paccini bested Liberty's Chase Burton and Max Borcuti, 6-2. Moments later, the home team's tandem of Petar Tomic and Chris Humphreys knocked off the Flames' Ryker Heller and Eddie Gutierrez, 6-2, at No. 2 doubles to secure the point.
In singles action, Sarrasague knocked off Burton at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-1, to give the freshman his first loss of 2017.
Louis Rico gave the Phoenix a 3-0 advantage with a straight-sets victory (6-1, 6-4) over Heller in the No. 6 spot. Elon's Felipe Osses-Konig clinched the match for the home side with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Borcuti in the No. 5 match to push the lead to 4-0.
Liberty's Gutierrez improved to 4-0 in singles play in 2017 with a 6-4, 6-4 triumph over Paccini at No. 2 singles.

The final two matches of the day (No. 3 and No. 4 singles) came down to tiebreakers, which were split. At No. 4 singles, Tomic topped Diego Castano, 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-4).
In the No. 3 position, Flames freshman Vince Salas prevailed over Salvador Mijares, 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-8) to settle the outcome at 5-2 in favor of the Phoenix. The win was Salas' team-leading 10th singles victory of the 2016-17 season.
Up next for the Flames is a pair of road matches at George Mason (2-2) and at Navy (7-2), Friday and Saturday.
