DES MOINES, Iowa – The Harper College wrestling team failed to place at the NWCA NJCAA National Duals last weekend, but several wrestlers had strong showings in the meet.
The Hawks, who came in ranked 20th in the nation at the Div. III level, defeated No. 6 Lincoln College 39-15 in their first round match. Harper lost 21-18 in a second round match with Iowa Central Community College and fell 25-18 to No. 13 Iowa Western to finish the weekend.
Jacob Bellis (/Bloomington) had the strongest showing of any Hawk wrestler, going a perfect 3-0 at 125 pounds. Bellis pinned Lincoln's Leslie Williams in the first round, Iowa Central's Nate Smith in the first round, and capped it off with a third consecutive first round pin over Iowa Western's Adrian Lozano.
Harper's Blake Tisza (/Thornton Fractional South) went 2-1 at 141 pounds. He pinned Lincoln's Jeremiah Tucker-Shead in the opening match and earned an 11-6 victory over Iowa Central's Teddie Harvey before losing 6-4 to Iowa Western's Peter Stewart. Greg Jacquez (/West Aurora) posted a 2-0 record at 157 pounds, earning a 15-5 victory over Lincoln's Graham Lough and pinfall victory over Iowa Western's Aleksei Vickers.
The Hawks return to action this upcoming Saturday at the Al Hanke Invitational in Elmhurst.
