Burton Named Big South Freshman of the Week

After helping the Liberty men's tennis team to a 2-0 start to its spring season, freshman Chase Burton has been named the Big South Freshman of the Week.

Burton opened up his 2017 season this past Saturday with a pair of doubles wins and two singles wins over King and Bluefield State at the Crosswhite Athletic Club in Lynchburg.

He teamed with Samuel Brown for a 7-5 doubles win over King, Saturday afternoon, and took down the Tornado's Moritz Poswiat, 6-4, 7-5, at No. 1 singles. The Flames captured the doubles point, and Burton's singles point contributed to their 5-2 victory over the Tornado.

On Saturday evening, the Naples, Fla., native won at No. 1 doubles with Max Borcuti. The duo picked up a 6-2 victory over Bluefield State's top pairing of Anthony Braem and Alexandr Rudenco. Playing at No. 1 singles again, Burton won in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3, over Braem. The Flames swept the doubles matches from the Big Blues for a point, and Burton's singles victory helped lift Liberty to a 4-3 triumph.

Burton and the Flames are back in action this Saturday in the Hill City, as they host James Madison (1-2) at 1 p.m. at the Crosswhite Athletic Club.
