Hassey Tabbed Big South Player of the Week

Liberty women's tennis player Mariely Hassey has been voted the Big South Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week.

Hassey, a senior, went 2-0 in singles and 1-0 in doubles, last weekend, against Big South opponent, UNC Asheville, and Furman.

Hassey is the second Liberty player this spring to be selected as the Big South Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week.
On Saturday at Asheville, she teamed up with freshman Eugenia Camacho for a 6-3 doubles victory over the Bulldogs' Christin Louw and Emily Sidor. In singles play, Hassey took down Sidor, 6-2, 6-0. The Lady Flames topped UNC Asheville, 6-1, to improve to 3-0 in Big South play.

Hassey continued her steady play at Furman on Sunday, defeating the Paladins' Hannah Ferrett in singles, 6-3, 6-2, to improve to 5-1 in singles play, this spring.

The Surprise, Az., native has a team-best 10 singles victories to her credit during the 2016-17 season and 59 career singles wins (sixth in program history) in four years in a Liberty uniform.

Hassey is the second Liberty women's tennis player this spring to be recognized as the Big South Player of the Week. Junior Evangeline Crist received the same honor on Feb. 8.

Hassey and the Lady Flames return to action in the state of Florida, this weekend. Liberty (4-4) will take on Florida Atlantic (4-3) on Friday morning in a neutral site match at the United States Tennis Association (USTA) National Campus at 11 a.m. in Orlando. The Lady Flames will then play host UCF (8-1) on Saturday at 4 p.m. at the USTA National Campus.
