Liberty Field Hockey Recognized in NFHCA Academic Awards

The Liberty Lady Flames field hockey team played its inaugural season as members of the BIG EAST Conference in the fall of 2016, finishing second in the conference in both the regular season standings and the conference championship. In addition to their successes on the field, the team was recognized in the Zag Field Hockey/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Academic Awards.
The Liberty field hockey team was recognized in the Zag Field Hockey/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Academic Awards.
The Lady Flames received the 2016 Zag Field Hockey/NFHCA Division I Academic Team Award for having a team GPA of 3.0 or higher. Liberty was one of 75 NCAA Division I field hockey programs to earn the distinction and has now earned the award in each of the program's six years.
In addition to receiving the team award, 16 Liberty field hockey players were named to the Division I National Academic Squad for having a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or greater through the first semester of the 2016-17 academic year (see list below). Liberty was one of 10 teams in the nation to have 16 or more players named to the squad.
Four players – Bethany Barr, Serena Barr, Jenny Kurlej and Annika Roberts – were honored with Division I Scholars of Distinction for achieving a cumulative GPA of 3.90 or higher. Liberty was one of six programs to have four or more players honored as scholars of distinction, joining Brown, Central Michigan, Kent State, Saint Francis and Towson.
