Liberty field hockey senior Serena Barr was named the Zag Field
Hockey/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division I
National Scholar Athlete, as announced by the NFHCA on Wednesday.
Barr
is the only NCAA Division I field hockey student-athlete in the country
to receive the award, given to the first, second or third team
All-American who maintains the highest cumulative GPA through the first
semester of the 2016-17 academic year.
The Lurgan, Northern
Ireland, native became the second All-American in program history, as
she was selected to the 2016 Longstreth/NFHCA Division I All-America
second team. Barr joined her sister, Natalie, who was voted to the
All-America third team in 2015.
Barr, a public health major, holds a cumulative GPA of 4.0.
Barr
is the award's third all-time winner and joins Old Dominion's Kelsey
Smither (2014) and Duke's Lauren Blazing as the only field hockey
players to receive it.
Barr was also named to the Zag
Sport/NFHCA Division I National Academic Squad and Scholars of
Distinction lists in all four seasons she competed for the Liberty Lady
Flames field hockey team.
