PALATINE, Ill. – The Harper College women's basketball team got off to a blazing start on Wednesday night against DuPage but could not keep the momentum going. The end result was an 88-57 defeat on Sophomore Night.
The Hawks (3-20, 0-11 N4C) opened a 10-3 lead in the first six minutes behind a strong defensive effort and six points from star center Monica Hinderer (Arlington Heights, Ill./The Willows Academy). Harper led 16-8 on a Rachel Payne (Wheeling, Ill./Schaumburg Christian Academy) basket, but Hinderer picked up her third foul with 9:45 to play in the half and the Chapparals came to life.
Sarah Lang's basket gave DuPage (15-11, 6-4 N4C) an 18-17 lead, and they continued the run for the remainder of the half. A basket by Brandi McAlister with 3:45 left pushed the lead to double digits and a Donna Koerber (21 points) layup capped off a 30-5 run for a 40-21 halftime lead.
Hinderer and Payne combined for 27 second-half points in their final career home game. Maddie Baillie led the Chapparals with 22 points and seven rebounds while Melissa Niggins scored all 13 of her points in the second half to go with 12 rebounds.
Hinderer scored 24 points on 11-of-22 shooting and totaled nine rebounds while Payne scored 16 points and had five steals. Hinderer, Payne and fellow sophomore Ashley Packard (Wheeling, Ill./Buffalo Grove ) were all honored prior to the start of the game. Packard scored eight points and had five rebounds.
